  • Jennie in Europe, take 2: Question for fellow Europeans

At the end of 2007, I offered to pay for Jennie's airfare across for Angouleme 2008, out of my unused Amex points. Too short notice, Bad $/€ ratio, etc., it didn't happen. But, it is going to happen for Angouleme 2009. That is, if the organisers (whose attitude to professionalism seems almost like a Jacques Tati parody of the workshy 1950s and 1960s) get their collective fingers out and actually reply to her e-mails.

Using up unused airmiles or Amex points is a way to support your favourite starving webcomiciste; it's not a new idea, that's how Jennie came across for the Bristol comics do - a guy called Nick paid her airfare that time.

I suggested to Jennie that she might do those little cards she does, in lots of languages. She was concerned that this might give the impression that she actually *speaks* all 22 languages, or that the published materials are available in them. Not so, I replied, it's just an icebreaker for people who can read English (probably most people at FIBDI*) and would buy stuff, but are too shy and hesitant to approach a solely anglophone stand if their spoken English isn't good.

Speaking only for myself, as a first-choice speaker of a minority language (Irish - gaeilge chonnactach) if I ever see *anything* in my language, be it about sanitary porcelain or contaminated plungers, my interest level goes up 1000%. Even a token gesture goes a long way.

So Jennie asked me how to say "Not Satanic Porn". I don't speak all 22, but I was able to reply:
French: Ce n'est pas de la pornographie satanique ; or more colloquially, il ne s'agit pas de la porno satanique
    Italian: Non e' pornografia satanica
    Irish: Nيl pornografaيocht diabhalta
Swedish: Den نr inte satanisk pornografi (Danish and Norwegian are much the same)
    Spanish: No es pornografيa satanica
Dutch/Flemish: Dit is geen satanic pornografie
Greek: Αυτό δεν είναι σατανική πορνογραφία
    Portuguese: Nمo é pornografيa satanica
... and I am pretty sure that the Icelandic is قessi eru ekki satanisk klلm, but 'satanic' isn't in my dictionary.

Can anyone help with the other 14 languages? (Yes I know 1 English + 8 + 14 makes 23. Icelandic doesn't count, it's not an official language). Corrections to my spelling or grammar also welcome. And isn't it weird that the Greek and Swedish are almost the same? Weave your own occult theories about this...

And, perhaps more important, Jennie is so concerned about going to an non-English-speaking country, she's planning on bringing her own private interpreter (who I'm pretty sure will be reading this thread...) Lecteurs de cet fil pourront sans doute la rassurer que la France d'aujourd'hui est beaucoup plus accueillante qu'aux années 70, ou meme le Québec actuel. There you go Jennie, I've asked all francophone readers to clasp you to their collective bosom. Or words to that effect.

This girl's teachers are able to reassure her without a doubt that the France of today is a lot more what than it was in the '70s? O.o

    Damnit ...

German: Dies ist keine satanische Pornografie
    German: Nicht satanische Pornografie

Arabic's proven hard to work out from here, but al-ibaahiya or al-fuhsha appears to be the word.

Will "There's no Satanic porn here!" do?

When I was fifteen, my father thought I knew nothing. When I was twenty-five, I was amazed by how little he thought I'd learned in such a long time.

lessee...Jackob and/or Bue could probably help with Danish, and John with Finnish...*thinks* I think we had someone from eastern-europe-ish...

One of my coworkers at another branch is from Bulgaria, and speaks fluent Russian besides...but I'm not sure how she'd take my asking her to translate that particular phrase. I might could come up with Latin, if you get desperate, though...

        Lecteurs is readers, not lecturers.
        acceuillante - welcoming

German is good. It's the most important European language I don't speak, and I reget my ignorance thereof. I can read it and understand it, but I can't speak it or write it - all those illogical gendered endings get me foxed. While I can just about live with le vagin being masculine, the idea that frauleins are also masculine does my head it.

Thanks for the German, we'll make Jennie Euro-compliant yet!

          Those and the Dative case.

German with logical genders and cases, possibly lifting them straight from Arabic but leaving the damnable diptotes behind, would be marvellous. One of the great things with German is that you can pronounce any word you see written down and spell any word you hear.

I should buy the lot, get out to Syria and pay soem nice Iraqi refugee to translate the lot into Arabic. That'd be good for international relations ... if I could get them over the various borders.

Where are the artichokes of yesteryear?

Oh and BTW fil is "thread" - readers of this thread, not readers of this girl. Girl is fille.

I am sure that Jennie put up today's post about artichokes and Guam to ensure that her webcomic will never appear in any language apart from American. Except in Gibraltar.

"If she asks about the artichoke, tell her I was in Guam" is definitely pure Gibberish.

I'd need a dictionary for "artichoke", but Guam's probably al-ghuwaam.

I'd guess the Polish to be "to nie jest szatański porno!" Since "porno" is a loan-word, it shouldn't matter too much which gender the adjective is, and you could have "diaboliczny" instead of "szatański"...

                  ow...

Here. Take these pillows and blankets. Trust me, you'll probably need them.

Did the accounts get imported from the phpBB? Couldn't find either of the handles I'd have registered with, anyway.

Posted a few times before Bristol to see if I'd be able to get a t-shirt there, a couple of times about modifying the old CAPTCHA to avoid automated sign-ups, and with slight surprise that the Lulu book I'd just bought was such a large file.

                            Dutch: Nederlands:
instead of "geen satanic pornografie" it has to be "Geen satanische pornografie"...

                            Other ways are:
                            Geen satanische porno
                            Geen duivelse pornografie/porno

The ", Honest!" would be ", echt waar!" or ", eerlijk waar!" the "eerlijk" is a direct translation of the "Honest", but in this case it would be rather strange to say.

The best dutch translation (Belgian dutch, not Netherlands dutch) would be:
"Geen satanische porno. Echt waar!" (i consider the "." more appropriate instead of the "," .. Otherwise it would have been a rather strange sentence-construction.
