    np np

That was just a quick reply from work Now that i read this from home, it seems a bit dry for a comment...

I think afrikaans is a very distinguished language.. it has a double negative:
    for example:
if you want to say: "That is not true". you get: "Da is nie waar nie". The correct dutch will be: "Dat is niet waar". I think afrikaans is a rather funny language to speak and hear (although the most common language there is still the french).

Now that i think of it.. it seems that i know quite a lot of languages..
Dutch (and derivates like afrikaans then), French, English, German and i`m currently busy with learning Japanese... Not bad for someone with a very poor language skill (i`m a scientist for a reason you know :P )

Well, if it could have been ported over, I couldn't figure the bugger out. Besides, this software has many more shiny buttons - yay!

If I may go back to the subject

I do love the idea of seeing Ms Breeden in France, and I'll be living close enough to Angouleme that if she actuelly gets there I'll go down and keep her company. Or bring her chocolate. Or bring my redheaded whife who is about just as insane as can be, that will make a great comic if nothing else.

Anyway I wanted to make a couple of remarks about the French translation:

        >"Not Satanic Porn". I don't speak all 22, but I was able to reply:
French: Ce n'est pas de la pornographie satanique ; or more colloquially, il ne s'agit pas de la porno satanique<

These are translations of "this is not satanic pornography", which are pretty accurate indeed, but I fear they don't got very well with the sense that "not satanic porn...honest" wants to convey.

Unless I'm totally wrong, and I shall pusnih myself with three hours of nonstop daytime TV is it's the case, the meaning is a bit more on the humorous and relaxed (familiar) side

Which may be more accurately conveyed by "C'est pas du porno statanique... jure" (with an accent on the last 'e' of jure, which I can't provide with my barbaric qwerty keyboard.

Accent aigue? I would assume so, given the meaning of the word.

I really miss being fluent in French. Haven't spoken it on a daily basis for nearly a decade now, although I have had the opportunity to converse with a couple of the local liquor reps in French.

If you're on a PC, there's a character map (with keystroke reference) in Accessories. Although I don't know if Vista changed this...

If you're on a Mac, there is a character map, but I think you have to open up TextEdit and pull up the Special Characters thing on the menu. I'm not sure, let me double check that when I get to work and edit the post.

          Eek! Running late!
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eyeball. Then...
          Hey, free eyeball!

Yup. Having lots of other countries nearby helps, I think. The only one I can really follow a newspaper in apart from English is French, and even that isn't exactly common over here in the UK... we're too damn insular...

"It's not satanic porn!" is at least more natural than "this isn't satanic porn" -- choice of punctuation and pronouns will carry some meaning.

In colloquial modern French, could you get away with "pas porn satanique, vraiment!" ?

Yeah, it's great out of the box if people are happy with most of the defaults. Making a smooth transition from a modified vB2 and getting it to fit into an existing fixed-width site was a bit of a pain, and the codebase/templates have grown increasingly monolithic, but it's nice enough on the whole.

You could get away with it indeed. then again you could get away with "Ce n'est pas de la pornographie satanique"

But is that the best french translation, ie: does it convey the original meaning best ? Personnaly I don't think so.
'vraiment' isn't really close to 'honest'. 'jure' fits the bill more

and getting rid of the "c'est" and "du" may shorten it more towards the size of the english version (well, american version, really) but it loses it's hook in French.

and porn is definately 'porno'. using 'porn' in french would confuse people.

This is of course my humble opinion, and although I was born there I haven't been in France long enough in the last 8 years to pick up on the latest langage variant. So another opinion is always wellcome.
I'll stick with my "C'est pas du porno satanique, jure !", though ;p

What makes me a good demoman? If I were a BAD demoman I wouldn't be sitting here, discussing it with you, now would I?! One crossed wire, one wayward pinch of potassium chlorate, one errant twitch, and KABLOOIE!...T'all you fine dandies so proud, so cock-sure...Prancin' aboot with your heads full of eyeballs! Come and get me I say! I'll be waiting on ya with a whiff of the 'ol brimstone. I'm a grim bloody fable....with an unhappy bloody end!

                  Oh no! The rancor!

I only gave versions of "Not Satanic Porn" because that's all Jennie asked for. Do I have to go down into the dungeons again and fight off The Rancor to get at my dictionaries again?

And who's going to volunteer for Basque, Armenian, and Georgian?

                    no can't do, sorry.

Although I don't REALLY think it's all that necessary ;p

They'll speak a mix of french/german/english.... sure will be a linguistical experience for Ms B (thick french accent being the worst EVER)
