these are the rules, they are for your safety & the safety of others at the range, VIOLATE THEM AT YOUR PERIL

RULE 1: treat EVERY gun like it is loaded
RULE 2: NEVER point your gun at ANYTHING that isn't a target
RULE 3: Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
RULE 4: Be sure of your target, & what's beyond/behind it

there are other rules, but these are the 4 that are most important

Guns are all fun and nice and all that, but I find a good mace leaves a longer lasting impression. Not the new spray mace, but the good old fashioned profusion of spikes on the end of a stick kind of mace.

A sword works pretty well too.

I once stopped a guy trying to break into one of my windows by kicking open the door to that room weilding a five and a half foot long Zwihander, and he disappeared fairly quickly, leaving a tail of pee behind him (luckily all outdoors). Of course the fact that I was standing there, backlit with nothing on but my underwear probably helped scare the piss out of him, but the sword was the thing reflecting the hall light into his very frightened eyes.

Of course, it's a damn good thing that I'm trained in the use of these items, but the fear factor is pretty sweet.

This having been said, if a person drawns a gun on me, the likelihood that I'll have one of these items on hand is only about 60%, but I'm cool with that.

wow, this topic is extremely coincidental.
the result of today's boredom and being with my little group of friends (my pirate crew, if you will) is that i have a swollen lump on one finger, and one on my belly.
it was a good day.

we had an airsoft rifle and i volunteered to be a target. i wanted to know how hard it shot. and for the record, I'd totally do it again.

Size matters.

There isn't a TRUE martial artist out there that will tell you differant. A six foot piece of steel will trump a 12 inch one for the intimidation factor pretty much 24/7.

But the simply fact is that even a cheap gun will kill reliably at twenty paces. That's:

Scary
Deadly
Real

You.. are unique. You can't really use YOUR experiences to judge the common man. If *I* jumped out a door with a sword in my hand, some thieves would attack. They'd DIE.. because I've had actual training and posess a lack of love for my fellow man that's spanned decades... But there is no way to convey that, if they aren't looking into my eyes.

A gun is an equalizer. All you need to do is learn to point it straight. THAT is intimidating.

granted in a grappling fight you'd win cause you scrawny guys like wriggle better and fight dirty. but when suddenly confronted by and armed anything the big guy is scarier.

Yep. Firearms: putting 5' tall arthritics on equal terms with 6'5" weight lifting rapists is a good thing.

Indeed, just as transportation to a job can easily be turned into a 3000lb missile, ending or destroying lives just because someone was angry or stupid. Any tool can be abused.

Dad taught me how to shoot when I was just 8 years old.
By the time I was 16 I was hunting with Dad and my uncles regularly and I bagged my first deer with a S&W 29-2 .44 magnum when I was 17. (If I shoot it, I clean it and eat it.)
I still shoot long guns and handguns on a regular basis and I keep that trusty S&W .44 mag at home for defense. (Loaded with Glaser rounds.)
I can outshoot anyone in the family except my Uncle Bill and I have had firearm safety drilled into me ever since Dad gave me my first BB gun.
I reload my own ammunition for each of my guns as I shoot often enough to make it economical, well except for my .22's. They don't make reloading equipment for rimfire ammunition that I know of.
Anyway the point to all this is that I hope Jenny enjoys her shooting experience safely.
